Vancouver’s MOVE: the company Returns Home for a Red Nocturnal Tour of British Columbia

November 01, 2011

Vancouver, BC — November 1, 2011

Joshua Beamish and the dancers of MOVE: the company are back home in BC, returning from overwhelmingly successful engagements in New York City, Bangkok and Montreal, and are performing their mixed-piece program entitled “The Red Nocturnal” in five cities across the province. Beamish and his 24 dancers will be performing in Chilliwack, Kelowna, Nelson, Vancouver and Nanaimo from November 11th to the 26th.

MOVE: the company’s recent NYC performance at the Joyce SoHo was described as “one of the most gratifying evening’s of dance presented on New York’s downtown arts scene this season” – Backstage Magazine.

MOVE: the company's new program “The Red Nocturnal”, is sure to rock the contemporary ballet world with repertoire that includes a re-imagined version of The Red Nocturnal, a physically demanding tango ballet en pointe originally created for Ballet Kelowna, and Les Oiseaux, a barefoot take on the traditional classical ballet narratives of Swan Lake and Firebird. The evening is completed by Artistic Director Joshua Beamish's new creation Atonement, which features a cast of ten male and eleven female dancers. Atonement was first developed at New York City Ballet's New York Choreographic Institute on the students of the School of American Ballet. The Bangkok International Festival for Dance and Music commissioned this program, in partnership with the Canadian Embassy, to celebrate 50 years of Canadian-Thai political relations. The company has invited the local Thai Dance Company to perform a traditional Thai piece as a program opener for their upcoming performance in Vancouver. In Nanaimo, MOVE: the company has invited KYDC Dancers (Nanaimo), True Colours Youth Group (Courtney), Helix Dance Theatre (Parksville) and Fizzik'l (Victoria) to open the performance, as a means of connecting local emerging performers with the professional artists of our province.

About MOVE: the company

In just six short years, Vancouver’s MOVE: the company has emerged as one of Western Canada’s most prolific dance companies. Founded in 2005 by current Artistic Director, Joshua Beamish, the company has performed across North America at venues such as Montreal’s Tangente and Studio 303, NYC’s Joyce SoHo and San Francisco’s The Garage. At home, the company has recently been presented by the Made in BC: Dance On Tour Program, The VIDF, Dancing on the Edge and the Chutzpah Festival, among others.  MOVE: the company recently received the distinction of a commission from the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC, as well as the only choreographic residency ever awarded to a Western Canadian by the Djerassi Program in San Francisco, CA. The company most recently performed at the 15th Anniversary of the International Ballet Festival in Miami and then continued on to the Quinzena de Danca Festival in Portugal. In October 2010, MOVE: the company had the honour of participating as the only non-Aboriginal Canadian dance company selected by curators Cirque du Soleil for WORLD EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, China, performing the Closing Gala of the Canadian Cultural Pavilion. The company recently performed at the Bangkok International Festival for Dance & Music in October 2011, and at the Canadian Embassy in Brunei, after a successful return engagement at the Joyce SoHo in NYC.
