Move the Spirit Open House 2011: A BC Spirit Initiative

January, 2011

MOVE: the company presents MOVE THE SPIRIT OPEN HOUSE 2011, a series of outreach engagement activities designed to welcome Vancouverites into our creative process. As both viewers and participants, the Vancouver public will be invited to participate in master classes, workshops, artist chats and studio showings of excerpts of new works by eight Canadian choreographers. See the detailed itinerary below.

Monday, Feb 21st – The Dance Centre, 677 Davie St (Birmingham Studio)

4:00pm   Allemande: Studio Showing & Artist Chat – Josh Beamish's newest creation will have its world premiere at the Joyce SoHo in New York on March 17th, 2011. We will offer a free in-studio preview followed by a talk-back with Guest Moderator Mary-Louise Albert of the Chutzpah Festival & Norman Rothstein Theatre.

Tuesday, Feb 22nd – The Dance Centre, 677 Davie St

9-10:30am Professional Master Class with National Ballet of Canada choreographer Matjash Mrozewski ($15 charge/class) – Jarislowsky Studio

2:30-3:30 Caught: Studio Showing & Artist Chat – We will present a free studio showing of Lara Barclay's duet work Caught, followed by an Artist Chat with Guest Moderator Jennifer Mascall of Mascall Dance. This discussion will largely focus on the support systems available, and not available, for dancers, choreographers and artists with children. Caught will tour to Toronto and New York in Spring 2011. - Birmingham Studio

Wednesday, Feb 23rd – The Dance Centre, 677 Davie St (Birmingham Studio)

9:30-11:00am Professional Master Class with National Ballet of Canada choreographer Matjash Mrozewski ($15 charge/class)

5:00-6:00 Firebird: Studio Showing & Artist Chat – We will present a free studio showing of Simone Orlando's Firebird, a work commissioned by the Turning Point Ensemble in collaboration with MOVE: the company. The showing will be followed by a moderation with Max & Susan Wyman. Firebird, winner of the 2011 Alcan Award for Music, also features an original composition by Jocelyn Morlock and will premiere at the Cultch on March 2nd, 2011.

Thurs, Feb 24th – Drive Dance Centre (1839 Commercial Drive)/The Cultch (1895 Venables St)

9:30-11:00 Professional Master Class with National Ballet of Canada choreographer Matjash Mrozewski ($15 charge/class) - DRIVE DANCE CENTRE

1:30-2:00 Sold Doubt: Showing & Artist Chat – MOVE: the company's Sold Doubt has been re-imagined into an educational program for youth that will tour the ArtStarts in Schools Network in 2011-2012. The company will present a 12-minute excerpt before presenters, youth and public audiences at ARTSCAN, followed by an Artist Chat with Artistic Director, Josh Beamish. - The Cultch

9:30-11:00 Professional Master Class with National Ballet of Canada choreographer Matjash Mrozewski ($15 charge/class)

Saturday, Feb 26th – The Dance Centre (677 Davie St)

3:00-4:00 Matjash Mrozewski New Creation: Showing & Artist Chat – National Ballet of Canada choreographer Matjash Mrozewski has returned to Vancouver after a recent performance at the Cultural Olympiad, to create a new work for 4 of the company's members. A short excerpt of Matjash's new work will be presented, followed by a talk-back with a guest moderator. Matjash's new work will have it's world premiere in Vancouver, as part of the upRising program, before touring to Toronto and New York in March-April 2011. - Kraul Studio

We will also offer a series of master classes with Artistic Director Josh Beamish and principal dancer Heather Dotto. There will be a cost of $20/class.
