Review | Dance troupes offer glimpses of playfulness, power at ballet festival (excerpt)
BY JORDAN LEVIN
Tantalizing glimpses of two leading modern dance troupes (MOVE: the company and New York's Evidence) were the highlight of the Miami International Ballet Festival's contemporary program on Sunday evening at the Colony Theater...
Josh Beamish, the artistic director of Vancouver-based MOVE: the Company, danced his own Suite for Solo Cello No. 1 in G Major, set to a recording of the Bach composition played by Yo-Yo Ma. Beamish is a compactly built dancer, but he moves with supple, whipping fluidity; the patterns in Solo Cello closely and adeptly followed the phrasing of the music, often starting from a ballet base and veering off in interesting ways. In excerpts from Sold Doubt, to music by the pop group No Doubt played by a string quartet, Beamish, Cai Glover, Tara Lee and Jesse Tyler were by turns playful, romantic and pugnacious. A better look at MOVE and Beamish's complete pieces would be welcome.
